Security advice from the police

a great recent post made by the police on their website so i thought i would post it here. A lot of it is common sense but should still be considered.

“Most burglars break into people’s homes on the spur of the moment through unlocked doors and windows – even if you are in the garden or upstairs,” she said. “So, with the current hot weather, we feel it is appropriate to give residents a reminder about the risks of leaving windows and doors unlocked, especially at night.

“Burglars are less likely to smash a locked window as the sound of breaking glass attracts attention. But if doors and windows are left open, their job is easy and they can be in and out of your property in seconds. So, enjoy the light evenings, but be conscious of open doors and windows at all times.”

Below are the top security tips for preventing a burglar from choosing your house:

•All downstairs windows should be closed and locked. If any others need to be left open for ventilation, consider fitting a window limiter. If you do fit one, it’s important to adapt your house fire plan accordingly.

•Don’t leave your house unattended with the windows and doors unlocked - even if it is ‘just for a minute’ or you’re out in the garden. Remember that home insurance may not be valid if premises are left insecure.

•Ensure that any access points such as side gates are locked. A simple padlock is often a sufficient deterrent.

•Before turning in for the night you should ensure that all doors are locked with a key, particularly any internal handle-operated locks on UPVC doors which will not be secure unless locked with a key. You should then remove the key from the door, but remember to make sure that everyone in the house knows where it is if it’s needed for an emergency exit.

•Easily accessible upstairs windows, every downstairs window and those which can’t be seen from the street, should be fitted with key-operated window locks. Remember to remove keys from locked windows and doors and keep them out of sight.

•Don’t leave car keys near to front doors where they can be ‘fished’ or ‘hooked’ out through the letterbox.

•Spare keys should never be left in a convenient hiding place i.e. under the door mat or in a flower pot - a thief will look there first.

•High-value items such as jewellery and credit cards should be kept out of sight - do not tempt the thief.

•Sheds and garages are full of tools which are ideal for breaking into the rest of the house - never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked.

•Consider looking at your house through a burglar’s eyes - are there places where they could break in unseen?

•Consider installing a burglar alarm. If you already have one fitted, make sure you set the downstairs zones at night.

•Install the best security you can afford in order to delay or deter burglars. They really do prefer an easy target.

Remote CCTV Monitoring & Access - How it can benefit you

CCTV systems, or closed circuit television to (give it its full name) has always been a reactive security measure - i.e. an incident occurs and then after the event you go back to view what happened and deal the incident (theft, etc)

The only problem is that the incident has already occured, although events are usually greatly reduced as cctv cameras provide an excellent deterrent (unless its a covert cctv system), especially when coupled with cctv warning signs.

However, with the surge of modern technology, remote cctv monitoring and access can be hugely effective for both reactive security and proactive cctv security.

For proactive cctv there are two main ways in which this can be done:

  • Connecting the cctv system to a remote monitoring station.

This is where a standard cctv system with perimeter protection is installed with an addiitonal piece of equipment that connects the system to a remote monitoring station. This is a building that is manned and monitored 24 hours a day.

This is especially effective when trying to protect a controlled area - for example a car park or a forecourt. During a period of the day - (or all day if required) should somebody walk into a protected area they will be detected by the perimeter security (usually beams or external PIR sensors) this then tells the cctv control system to connect to the monitoring station and they can see a live feed to the protected site. Usually an onsite PA system allows the monitoring station to talk “Live” to the site to inform the person entering the site that they are enetering a protected area and to leave immediately or the police will be contacted. they can also talk to the police live andtrack the criminals on site too!!

If required the remote monitoring station can also control and operate electrical systems remotely - for example an automatic gate or barrier - they can view and talk live to the required area and decide whether to open that gate / barrier or refuse entry - this often can lead to not needing on site guarding and therefore reducing ongoing costs.

  • Using PC’s and mobile phones to remotely access the cctv system.

With braodband , wifi and internet on the move now being readily available and relatively cheap remote accessing of a cctv system has never been so easy or so cheap for a home or a small business. If you have broadband where the cctv system is installed then as long as the DVR has the ability (most do) you will be able to access the cctv system from anywhere in the world, as if you were literally standing in front of the DVR itself.

This is an excellent tool for the business owner who has more than one business premises - all you have to do is simply connect to whichever business premises you want and from there you can monitor staff activity, customers, anything the cameras are faced at really. You can even listen to an audio sounds if microphones are attached to the system.

Remotely accessing a cctv system saves time, money and the impracticality of having to travel to each location to see what is happening and lets you concentrate on making money.

If you have this at home you can even use it to make sure the kids have got back home from school ok, the uses and benefits are various and endless. it makes your cctv system even more value for money.

So these are two brief examples of how remote access and monitoring of a cctv system can eally affect not only the security of your home and business but have day to day benefits that really can make a difference.

Security Lighting - Friend or Foe?

Security lighting - is it an effective deterrent to burglars? in my humble opinion the simple answer is no.

i take the view as this - if i wanted to burgle a home or business and the only security factor was a security light would it stop me? the answer would be no, so therefore a professional burglar would be even less inclined to see the security light as a deterrent. a single light is to easy to overcome and therefore be made redundant.

Now using a security lighting system as an additon to your security protection is a completely different thing altogether.

Using a security light as the first barrier or layer of your security makes more sense, this can be configured to either work as an independent unit to illuminate an area before a burglar managed to enter an area or simply to illuminate an area for your cctv coverage perhaps.

Another way to use security lighting is to make it part of an integrated security system, this is where independent security systems are combined to make one large security system, for example combining a security lighting system with a burglar alarm system and a cctv system  so that they work in unison and create an effective deterrent and can also help to catch the criminal as well.

A final use of a security lighitng system is that it can also be used just to illuminate an area when required, not for securiy purposes just general lighting for forecourts, car parks, garden and driveways - wherever you may need lighting. this can be times to operate automatically or manually switched on or off as required.

So security lighting does have its uses and advantages, but remember to think twice of using it purely for security purposes and crime prevention

if you need any more information on security lighting then please feel free to leave a comment.

DIY burglar alarms - should you? would you? What if?

So you’ve been to the local DIY warehouse and seen they do a burglar alarm for £100 - seems good value doesn’t it. Why should you pay a security company XXX amount of pounds when you can get a burglar alarm system this cheaply and install it yourself?

I will agree with you here, in one aspect at least having some form of burglar alarm for your home is better than nothing at all - if your budget can only stretch so far then by all means go ahead - but even then i would use the £100 for other things that can be done (but more on that another time!!!).

The problem with a DIY burglar alarm system is the general rule with most things - you get what you pay for. To explain in a bit more detail:

A profesionally installed burglar alarm system has to meet to certain criteria, rules and regulations to ensure that it does the job its supposed to - i.e. protect your home, business, family etc. there are also rules and conformity issues regarding insurance and police requirements as well.

This is where the systems main difference is: a “proper” burglar alarm system will conform and comply to all the issues required, including insurance requirements and a DIY alarm system will not.

This can create several solutions - one of the worst being that if you did get broken into your insurance may well be invalid due to your DIY burglar alarm system not conforming to their requirements and therefore leaving you out of both pocket and possessions - not a nice place to be.

Other issues is that the DIY alarm looks like a DIY alarm - you’ve all seen the yellow Yales boxes on the wall - all look the same, and all give the burglar the inclanation to lean towards burglary in your home rather than a bespoke external siren installed by a professional security installer, not being nasty - just simple facts.

One final factor to consider - a professionally installed burglar alarm or security system comes with a service agreement - in the case of an NSI approved company this is 2 hour teleophone support and 4 hour response times (amongst other things) so shoulf their ever be an issue with the security system then there is always someone on hand to help and resolve the issue - when was the last time you saw a DIY warehouse offering support and advice at 1am in the morning??

So these are some of the issues to consider when deciding whether to buy a DIY alarm system from one of the warehouses or have a professional installer suply and install the security system for your home or business.

As always feel free to comment if you agree. diagree or have any questions

Security screening - make sure you can trust your security installer

So you’ve decided that you want to get a security system installed, whether its at your home or office you need to know one question:

Can you trust the person installing the security system?

These is one simple way to answer this question - have they been security screened? All NSI approved companies have to security screen their employees to establish whether they can be trusted and to whether they have a crimonal record or not.

To simply put it, if when your checked out it comes up with any blemishes then you’re not getting the job - its that simple.

Now think about it again - you’ve decided to get a security system installed, whether it be a burglar alarm system, a cctv system or even an access control system

you’ve got three quotes in - two from a NSI approved company and one from the local electrician and he’s the cheapest - do you go with the local electrician? can you honestly rely on him? do you think you can trust him? Can you be for certain, 100% that he’s a law abiding citizen?

The simple answer is No, as he isn’t regulated by a security industry governing body, then has no security screening and therefore could be a complete rogue - not saying he will be but you just never know do you?

So when it comes to placing you security at home or at work to provide that security and safety who are you going to use now? gives you a little more to think about and consider doesn’t it.

Everything isn;t to do with price but more to do with value for money and getting a much as you can for your money and all these little services in the background add up to a whole lot of benefits that you can’t see on that bottom line.

Need any more information on security screening and trusting your security system installer then please fell free to leave me a comment here

False alarms - 3 reasons why they happen and how to stop them

False alarms - they’re a pain arn’t they!!! well here some common causes of false alarms and how best to avoid them.

False alarm cause number 1 - spiders

Solution: spiders love to crawl behind PIR detectors in the corner of a room, its warm and dark behind there, at night the spiders will come out and crawl over the PIR lens - now a spider on the lens looks like an elephant from ten feet away so will causer the burglar alarm system to activate.

The simplest way to prevent this is once a month get the vacumn extension (the hose bit) and stick it by the base of the PIR detector and suck up any unwanted spiders and remove this problem.

False alarm cause number 2 - The user

More often than not (at a rough guess the percentage is about 85%) of false alarm are caused by the end user / customer through not knowing how to operate the burglar alarm system correctly, through to forgetting the code or even not letting a person (like a relative) know the code.

An easy way to remove this problem is to use proximity fobs - these fobs simply remove the need to remember codes, just present your fob to the keypad and the system will unset, present the fob again and the system will start setting - simple.

this upgrade will often result in needing to replace the existing control panel and keypad for the burglar alarm system - especially if it’s a few years old (or more).

there are many other ways in which the user causes the false alarms (not being horrible - it’s true) but i will details and discuss these later.

False alarm cause number 3 - windows and doors

Leaving windows open during the summer months seems like a great idea doesn’t it, nice fresh air in the house and keeps you cool - but its a false alarm nightmare.

PIR detectors work on the movement of infra-red heat and when windows are left open (especially on a warm day) a draft can come in and move the already warm air around the room - potentially causing a false alarm.

Another simple way in which drafts can affect the alarm is to either blow items over causing the PIR to activate or by simple forms of air pressure cause doors to open and close, again causing the alarm to falsely activate.

So if you are experiencing false alarms then take the above factors into consideration and see if they can help. if the problems continue then please feel free to contact me i will see if i can help. Or failing that you can always wait until my next blog piece for false alarms causes and solutions.

top tips for home security - step 2 - it’s in the detail

The safety of your home and family is upmost importance - here is some advice and tips on how you can best secure your home:

Security Tip #1 Secure your home with multiple levels of security rather than a single layer.

In a laymans terms - the more the merrier. You want to put as many deterrents and obstacles in the way of the burglars as possible.

The Reason: It is easier for a criminal to get by one level of security rather than several. The more obstacles you put in their way the more likely they are to go somewhere else. its really that simple!!!

Also, a factor to consider, The more deterrents that are visible, the better. Generally the criminal will simply select another property to burgle without the hassle of having to overcome security systems.

An example of several layers of security

  1. External warning signs
  2. gates/fences that are locked when not in use (night time etc)
  3. thorny shrubs / plants
  4. a burglar alarm system
  5. a cctv system
  6. Security lighting
  7. Door locks
  8. Window locks

Security Tip #2 Pretend to be a burglar

Take a walk around your home and garden and ask yourself this question: How would I break-in to the house? look at your home from several different areas including in the street. Are there any particuarly dark / vulnerable / blind spots that would appeal to a burglar? Can anything been seen from outside that would make a burglar visit your home?

Because you can bet a penny to a pound if you can see them, then a half decent burglar can too!

The Reason: We think of our home as a home, not as an opportunity and criminals think the opposite. Carrying out these easy checks could help you identify any problems you may have and get them sorted before hey become an issue.

Security Tip #3 How useful is the lock on your door?

A door lock is often seen and thought of as doing enough. he harsh reality is that it isn’t. Do you know if your lock meets your insurance requirements? becuase if it doesn’t then your insurance claims may not be paid!!!

Is the lock protected? can it easily be tampered with? can the burglar get easy access to the lock? Do you have more than one lock? Are there any vulnerable points around the lock? ( tip - you need to look around 18 - 24 inches around the lock).

Reason: A burglar doesn’t care how much damage he causes getting in. The lock is only one part of the door securty (think hinges / door strength / door construction) The best locks in the world will do no good if the burglar can easily break the door by kicking.  Other locks can be easily overcome by breaking a window pane and opening from the inside.

Security Tip #4: Treat your garage door like your front door.

Ever thought about how secure your garage door is? most garage doors only have the lock provided by the door manufacturer and remain that way. These garage doors can often be opened by a hard shove and then the burglar has the time to take whatever he needs.

Now think about how much you actually keep in the garage and how much it would cost to replace the stolen items - its more than what you though isn’t it! Burglars often steal to order from garages, especially in remote / county areas where sit on mowers etc are usually located.

Reason: As garages are not part of the house, the chance of being caught is reduced wheich makes them a proime target for break ins. To prevent this fromhappening additional locks specifically for garga e doors can be installed to prevent this from happening. As an additional item the burglar alarm system for the home can be extended to protect the garage - either wired or wirefree.

Security Tip #5 Make horticulture your friend to help protect your home.

Thorny plants, bushes and hedges can not only bring beauty to the garden but also can help protect your home by making approaches to windows a painful and unappealing experience.

Reason: One of the most common burglary entrance points into the home is through side or rear windows. A Burglar will target these windows as their is less chance of them being seen / detected when trying to gain access. By placing thorny (yet attractive) plants / bushes by these potentially vulnerable windows makes thse areas a little less vulnerable and appealing to a burglar.

Security Tip #6 Cover your windows - plain windows help the burglar!

Plain windows allow burglars to look inside and see if you have anything of value to steal.

Reason: It is amazing in how much you can see when a window isn’t covered, within a few seconds a burglar can see if you are in, what you have to steal, potentila exit routes - basically everything!! Some burglars are even brave enought o just walk right up to the window and look in. Plain windows and very thin drapes allow the burglar to do this. The burglar is able to see what he wants a create a plan before he even attempts to break in to the house.

By having a heavier curtain set or venetian blinds can help break up the remote view into your home, it also has an added bonus of keeping the house warmer whilst reducing the threat of burglars visiting you. It simply reduces the guarantees of safety / rewards for the burglar which helps to serve as a deterrent.

Security Tip #7 Make sure your doors and windows are fitted correctly.

Seems like an obvious statement doesn’t it! unfortunately not everyone installs items perfectly and this could be a problem.

Reason: An estimated 25% of all patio doors / sliding doors and windows are installed backwards (so the sliding part is on the outside track). This allows the criminal to simply lift out the panel and enter as they wish! (scary isn’t it)

Security Tip #8 Make it look like your house is occupied.

A house is less likely to be burgled when occupied.

Reason: Making your house look occupied when empty can help prevent a burglary, having lights on automatic timers, not having newspapers left half hanging out of the letter box for two weeks, milk bottles on the step for ages all help with putting the element of doubt in  a burglars mind

Security Tip #9 Create a neighborhood watch in your street.

Even just the signs in the window, its another visual deterrent.

Reason: Having a whole street be security concious and working together can help deter criminals. IT is more often than not reson enough for them to look alsewhere for their burglary victims.is the criminal’s nemesis. It is often reason enough for him to try business elsewhere.

A top tip is to get retired people actively involved. They often have more time on their hands to help organise and control the scheme.

Security Tip #10 Mark your name and postcode on your more expensive items

Reason : Items with your name, address and markings cannot be easily sold. The simple reason being that it can be easily proven that the items is not theirs and is therefore stolen. So, why steal something that you a) can’t sell, b) if you are caught with you’re definitely going to be arrested for?
A top tip is to photograph your more expensive items, with the markings and identification marks you have put on the item and store these photos in a secure location, ideally save two copies and store one of these copies off site (with a relative for example)

Security Tip#11 Get a safe!

It’s not just cash and jewels that need to go in there, but your important paperwork.

Reason: Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes worldwide. Although many people think burglars are going to go for jewellery, money and/or electrical items, what most people do not realise is that the greatest damge that can be done is if a criminal gets access to your private information and records. From this information your identitiy can be cloned and basically ruin your life by “becoming you”

Make sure your safe is secured to a solid wall and / or the floor so it cannot be easily removed from your property.  IT is also wise to make sure that the safe coverage is upto or exceeding the value of goods it is holding.

Security  Tip #12 On top of everything else, get a burglar alarm system.
This is another layer of the security. You can go anywhere from a basic burglar alarm system to a wirefree alarm system

Reason: Now that you have made our property less appealing and harder to access for the burglar, a burglar alarm system now becomes even more effective. As well as being an excellent visual deterrent, the burglar alarm will now also sound when the intruder tries to break in to the property. The Police can also be called if required. In addition to the security element, your burglar alarm can also include smoke detectors and gas detectors to keep the family safe (and your insurance down!!)
